1.01 · Welcome and Sesson One Overview
Greetings, K-2 Educators!
Welcome to the SERP Professional Learning Course on Literacy Workstations!
The goal of the course, developed in collaboration with the District of Columbia Public Schools, is to support teachers with the challenging task of establishing and sustaining highly productive workstations.
There is no single, best approach to literacy workstations. Therefore this course does not provide a recipe for you to follow. However, some experienced teachers have developed practices and routines that make their workstations particularly effective. We draw on their practices in this course. You will see for yourself how their strategies achieve the critical goals of effective time use, appropriate differentiation, student independence and ownership, and attention to the full range of skills that must be developed for K-2 students to become good readers.
The course can be completed individually or in a group. However, we recommend that every participating teacher work with their literacy leader, coach, or another colleague for purposes of talking through ideas and getting feedback on the work completed as part of the course.
Estimated time to complete: 1 hour
For each session, we provide a notecatcher. This document includes all of the questions and prompts that you will engage with throughout the session.
You will be prompted to submit all of your responses in the activity text box. But you may copy and paste your answers into the notecatcher to have a record of your responses and take notes.
