Differentiated activities for K-2 Word Work

As a complement to the Effective Literacy Workstations course, activities were developed for the word work station because it is generally the most demanding for teachers to plan—especially if the work is differentiated to support maximum student progress. The materials, explained in an optional section in Session 4 of the course, can be purchased through SERP.

Word work activities are intended to take about 15-20 minutes for students to complete. Activities are repeated at increasing levels of difficulty, minimizing the time required of the teacher to train students on new tasks.

Games

Each day, students fill out a Practice Page to turn in at the end of the word work station time.

Activities can be easily matched to skills in the primary curriculum and to each student’s needs.

Each day is tagged with the skill or skills that are practiced so activities can be easily aligned with the progression of topics in the primary curriculum. The materials also feature activities at various levels of challenge, so that activities can be tailored to meet each student’s needs. Activities include three versions of the student Practice Pages, each focusing on the same skill but with different scaffolds; on-grade level, support level, and challenge levels.

Worksheet: Building words. Illustrations of a ball, pig, paint splash, bed.
Worksheet: matching words with objects; includes images of people, a truck, and a boat.
Worksheet with pictures and fill-in-the-blank spaces for words.

Activities are slowly introduced to familiarize students.

In the first couple weeks of the school year, activities are introduced to the entire class, with all students working on the same content. The goal is to familiarize students with the activity types. After the first 10 days, students complete activities specific to their challenge level. While students work independently or in pairs, the teacher can begin skills-based, teacher-led, small group instruction.

Additional materials are provided for flexibility.

Additional blank Practice Page templates are included, which allow teachers to develop their own activities using the supplied materials. Suggestions are also included for extension activities for early finishers who would benefit from additional work to stay engaged and productive.

A full explanation for how to use the materials is included with the Teacher Guide that comes with the Word Work Station Kits and in Session 4 of the Effective Literacy Workstations course.
